Sport & Entertainment in Ancient Greece

Program Description

Ancient Greeks enjoyed watching and participating in various sports and athletic activities. Over three weeks, we'll examine some of the most popular sports including running, chariot racing, boxing, and wrestling, as well as athletic competitions like the Olympics. We'll see how sports reflected the ideals of ancient Greece and how sport often transcended the realm of entertainment to influence other parts of ancient life including politics and religion. SCHEDULE: 3 Mondays, May 27 to June 10, 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM This presentation will take place online. You will receive a link to the class by email 24 hours before the presentation begins. ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Dr. Heather Barkman was born and raised in Manitoba. After receiving her BA and MA from the University of Manitoba, she moved to Ottawa to get her PhD from the University of Ottawa with a focus on women in early Christianity. She then moved back home to Winnipeg and teaches in the Classics and Religious Studies departments at the University of Manitoba. When she's not teaching, she loves baseball, travelling, and having fun with her husband Sid and two children.
